DJI Osmo Mobile makes your smartphone movies steady as a rock

DJI, more famous for its range of drones that take to the sky than mobile phone accessories, has released a new version of its Osmo Mobile camera. Design-wise, it essentially looks like a high-tech joystick with a robotic smartphone mounting arm attached.

DJI’s latest Osmo is the handheld smartphone stabiliser that wannabe YouTube stars have been screaming out for. Ditching the original Osmo’s built-in camera for a bracket that’ll hold any phone helps slash the price, smoothly opening the door to more filmmakers than ever.

It’s a quality bit of kit in action, and I should know - I had to be prised off of DJI’s booth at IFA after draining the batteries on their demo unit. Here’s why it should be on your short film shortlist.

ActiveTrack technology built into the DJI GO app allows the Osmo Mobile to automatically keep your smartphone facing you as you move. You no longer have to choose between recording a moment or taking part in it. Do both and share scenes from your life that people have never seen.

The Osmo Mobile is compatible with most recent smartphone models, including the iPhone 5, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s Plus, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Huawei Mate 8, and presumably the new iPhone 7 when that comes out later this month. It should, say DJI, accommodate any Android or iOS smartphone with a width between 2.31 and 3.34 inches.
